E-Cigarettes for Beginners: How to Choose Your First Device

Choosing an e-cigarette for beginners involves considering several factors: ease of use, battery life, inhalation style and maintenance. For an adult smoker who is new to vaping, a straightforward device suited to their habits is generally preferable to equipment with numerous settings.

At RoyalCig, we offer a selection of vape kits and pod systems for beginners from different brands. Each model has its own features, such as a built-in battery, refillable cartridge, replaceable coil or automatic activation. Vaping is not risk-free and is intended for adult smokers, not non-smokers.

Which Type of E-Cigarette Should You Choose as a Beginner?

Pod Systems: Compact and Easy to Use

A pod e-cigarette is often an easy-to-use option. It operates with a cartridge containing e-liquid and may feature automatic draw activation or a firing button.

Some pods have a coil integrated into the cartridge. Others allow the coil to be replaced separately. Before choosing a model, check the availability of replacement parts and how the cartridge is filled.

Compact Kits with Built-In Batteries

An e-cigarette starter kit may combine a rechargeable battery with a compatible tank or cartridge. Some devices automatically detect the installed coil and adjust their operation accordingly.

Kits with fewer settings can make initial use easier, while others allow users to gradually adjust power and airflow.

Kits with Adjustable Wattage

Some beginners choose a device that allows power adjustment in watts. This feature can help customise the vaping experience but requires following the recommended operating range of the installed coil.

The maximum power displayed on the device is not a setting that should always be used.

What Should You Compare Before Buying Your First E-Cigarette?

Ease of Refilling

Depending on the model, the tank may be filled from the top, from the side or after removing the cartridge. An accessible filling system clearly explained in the user manual makes everyday handling easier.

Battery Life

Battery capacity is generally expressed in mAh. Actual battery life also depends on power output, coil resistance and frequency of use.

For a first device, it is useful to check the charging method, connection type and manufacturer's information about charging time.

Availability of Coils and Cartridges

A coil is a consumable component. On some models, it can be replaced separately, while on others it is built into the cartridge. Check compatible references to ensure the e-cigarette can be maintained over time.

Understanding Mouth-to-Lung Vaping (MTL)

Mouth-to-lung inhalation, also known as MTL, involves drawing the aerosol into the mouth before inhaling it into the lungs. It is generally associated with a relatively tight draw.

Some devices also support restricted direct-to-lung (RDL) inhalation, with more open airflow. The inhalation style depends on the device, its coil and its airflow settings.

For an adult smoker discovering e-cigarettes, understanding these differences helps compare devices beyond their appearance.

Which E-Liquid Should You Use When Starting?

The choice of e-liquid must take into account the installed coil and the manufacturer's recommendations. The ratio between propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) particularly affects the viscosity of the liquid.

Some compact devices use coils suited to relatively thin e-liquids. Others accept formulations with higher VG content. Always check e-liquid compatibility with the equipment.

Understanding Nicotine Strengths

E-liquids may contain different nicotine concentrations, expressed in mg/ml. The choice depends on the habits of an adult smoker and the characteristics of their e-cigarette.

Freebase nicotine and nicotine salt formulations may produce different sensations when inhaled. Nicotine is addictive. If you are unsure about the appropriate strength or are planning to quit smoking, a healthcare professional or smoking cessation specialist can provide personalised guidance.

How to Prepare Your First E-Cigarette

Before first use, read the user manual and check that all components are correctly installed. Make sure the cartridge or tank is compatible with the device.

When a new coil contains cotton, it must be properly saturated with e-liquid before use, according to the manufacturer's instructions. A coil that is not sufficiently saturated may produce a burnt taste.

If the device offers adjustable wattage, follow the recommended range for the coil. Also use the recommended charging system.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Starting Vaping

A few simple checks can help prevent common problems:

• Do not use wattage above the coil manufacturer's recommendations.
• Do not use e-liquid that is incompatible with the tank or coil.
• Do not activate a new coil before it has been properly saturated.
• Do not continue using a coil that produces a burnt taste.
• Do not use a damaged device or one showing abnormal overheating.
• Do not neglect cleaning and replacing consumable components.

Maintaining Your Beginner E-Cigarette

Regular maintenance helps keep the equipment working properly. This includes checking the condition of the tank, seals, cartridge and coil.

Reduced flavour, an unusual taste or changes in aerosol production may indicate that a consumable component needs replacing.

Always follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Electronic components and batteries must never be immersed in water.
